Marketing and development for Tasmania’s tourism industry

The Tasmanian Visitor Survey (TVS) provides a profile of the characteristics, travel behaviour, and expenditure of international and domestic visitors to Tasmania.
Tourism Tasmania provides the data collected in the TVS to the Tasmanian tourism industry and to government agencies to facilitate and promote the development of the industry.
The TVS is acknowledged as the most reliable source of statistical data about visitors to Tasmania, being based on a sample of more than 9,000 visitors to Tasmania each year.
The TVS collects a wider variety of data about visitors to Tasmania than other visitor surveys. Being an island, visitors to Tasmania can be accurately counted as they depart from Tasmania’s air and sea ports. This is a real advantage for data collection, making the TVS methodology very robust.
The TVS was first conducted in 1978 and then intermittently through the early and mid 1980's. In 1988 the TVS became an annual survey.
