Tasmania Ranked Best Island

Influential North American magazine Travel + Leisure has named Tasmania as the number one island in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific, in its 2009 World’s Best Awards.

The prestigious accolade from the world’s highest circulating travel title confirms Tasmania is a world-class visitor destination, ranking it ahead of Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef islands and Tahiti’s Moorea.

The Travel + Leisure award also highlights the strength of Tasmania’s position in the international tourism marketplace, particularly in North America, and provides a huge impetus for travel to the state.

Tasmania continues to grow in popularity as a holiday destination for North Americans, with the Tasmanian Visitor Survey reporting 30 700 visitors from the USA and Canada in the year to March 2009, up four per cent on the previous year.

Hawks to Put Bounce in Tassie School Kids

All primary schools across Tasmania will receive a free sports pack under a Tasmanian Government and Hawthorn Football Club initiative to encourage Tasmanian school children to have fun being active.

The Tasmanian Government, together with its friends at the Hawthorn Football Club, developed the sports pack for 226 government and non-government primary schools across Tasmania. Each sport pack contains an AFL football, netball, soccer ball, volleyball, basketball and a pump.

More than 56,000 Tasmanian primary school students will have access to the new sports equipment under the Hawks in Schools program.

The packs will go to schools during July and early August via Australia Post and to selected schools through the MBF Hawks Express road show.

In addition to the sports packs and as part of the Tassie Hawks in Schools program, all grade four students in Tasmania will receive a Tassie Hawks in Schools booklet, developed by Hawthorn’s major partner MBF in conjunction with the Department of Education. The booklet is fun and engaging, full of interesting sports and health-related information for kids.

The packs are an example of the benefits of the Tasmania-Hawthorn partnership to regional communities, local football clubs, Tasmanian charities and school children.
