Hawks Bring Tasmania ANZAC Day Honour

Tasmania saw Hawthorn play West Coast at Aurora Stadium last Saturday 25 April.

The game was the first time Aurora Stadium had hosted an AFL game on ANZAC Day, Australia’s most significant national day and one of the most highly anticipated game days on the AFL calendar. The history of Aussie Rules on ANZAC Day goes to the heart of Australian spirit and culture.

The game was also the first AFL home and away fixture played under lights at Aurora Stadium.

In 2008, Tasmania's sponsorship of the Hawks generated $15.14 million for the Tasmanian economy, and attracted around 24,000 additional tourists to Tasmania as a direct result of matches played at the stadium. Each person spent around $220 per day and stayed for an average of 3.2 nights.

The Hawthorn v West Coast game is the first of four AFL Premiership Season fixtures to be played at Aurora Stadium in 2009, with Brisbane, the North Melbourne Kangaroos and St Kilda also taking on the Hawks during the season.

Team Tasmania Application Closing Date Extended

The response to the launch of Tourism Tasmania's revamped Team Tasmania program has been extremely positive, with over 50 operators applying for program membership.

The program enables ‘export ready’ operators to work with Tourism Tasmania on a variety of international marketing opportunities.

In response to the high interest shown by operators across the state, and in recognition of the heavy workloads currently placed on small businesses in attending to guests, Tourism Tasmania has extended the deadline for the submission of membership applications to Thursday 7 May.

Operators interested in joining Team Tasmania can apply online before then by going to www.tourismtasmania.com.au/teamtas

Savour Tasmania

Savour Tasmania is a new culinary event that will bring some of the world’s best chefs to the state, to celebrate and showcase Tasmanian quality produce.

The event will combine premium local produce with global culinary expertise to raise the national and international profile of the Tasmanian food and beverage industry.

Working with local restaurants, produce suppliers and tourism agents, the event aims to broaden public knowledge and create unforgettable culinary experiences for all patrons.

Savour Tasmania will be held from the 27 to 31 of May and will bring three celebrated international chefs to Tasmania - Tetsuya Wakuda; Emmanuel Stroobant from Singapore; and London chef Shane Osborn.

A sold out gala dinner involving all three chefs will be held at The Henry Jones Hotel Atrium, hosted by Christopher Lawrence from ABC Radio, and they will also share their expertise at demonstration classes for hospitality students and the broader hospitality industry.

Three other popular Australian chefs will hold master classes, and Savour Tasmania will conclude with the ‘Red Wine Weekend’.

Savour Tasmania is coordinated by the Department of Economic Development and Tourism. A large number of individuals, organisations and companies are also supporting the event, providing invaluable investment and commitment to the promotion and development of Tasmania's food and beverage industry while celebrating the island's unique attributes.

Zone Holiday Planner Update

Since the launch of the new Zone Holiday Planners in February, more than 221,411 planners have been distributed, viewed, or downloaded by consumers.

In total 9,542 have been downloaded as pdf, and 200,246 have been viewed online. A further 11,623 of the glossy, full-colour Holiday Planners have been sent direct to the consumer in response to phone, email and website requests to Tourism Tasmania’s Contact Centre.

The Zone Holiday Planners are the result of a collaboration between Tourism Tasmania and the five recently established Zone Marketing Groups. This new shared approach to marketing the state is enabling a greater targeting of financial resources and provides a more effective way to highlight the state’s diverse experiences.
