March quarter 2009 (compared with the March quarter 2008):
- Takings from accommodation increased 1.7% to $61million (up from $60 million).
- Room occupancy rates for the March quarter 2009 reached 75.1% (up from 74.3%) which is the highest occupancy rate for all states for the quarter (the March 2009 National year ending average was 62.9%).
- The Tasmanian average taking per room night occupied was $136.40, an increase of $2 ($134.40). The national average was $152.80.
- There were 153 accommodation establishments with 15+ rooms, four less than the previous corresponding quarter. These constitute approximately 3.6% of all establishments with 15 or more rooms in Australia.
- There were 4,842 persons employed in Tasmanian accommodation with 15+ rooms which represents approximately 4.3% of all nationwide employment in accommodation with 15+ rooms.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics conducts the Survey of Tourist Accommodation (STA). The purpose of the STA is to measure activity in short-term commercial accommodation in Australia. It is a quarterly census of the following accommodation establishments:
- licensed hotels and resorts with facilities and 5 or more rooms
- motels, private hotels and guest houses with facilities and 5 or more rooms
- serviced apartments with 5 or more units
- caravan parks with 40 or more powered sites
- holiday flats, units and houses of letting entities with 15 or more rooms or units
- visitor hostels with 25 or more bed spaces.
