Survey of Tourism Accommodation

Mar 2008 Accom ReportThe Australian Bureau of Statistics conducts the Survey of Tourist Accommodation (STA). The purpose of the STA is to measure activity in short-term commercial accommodation in Australia. It is a quarterly census of the following accommodation establishments:

  • licensed hotels and resorts with facilities and 5 or more rooms
  • motels, private hotels and guest houses with facilities and 5 or more rooms
  • serviced apartments with 5 or more units
  • caravan parks with 40 or more powered sites
  • holiday flats, units and houses of letting entities with 15 or more rooms or units
  • visitor hostels with 25 or more bed spaces.

Key Results - Mar 2008

  • In the March quarter 2008 (compared to March quarter 2007):
    • Takings from accommodation increased 2.6% to $6.8 million (up from $6.6 million).
    • Room occupancy rates reached 61.6% (up from 60.5%).
    • Average length of stay in Tasmanian accommodation was 1.6 days (down from 1.7 days) and down from the National average 1.8 days.
    • An average taking per room night was $121, well above the National average of $102. Only Western Australia was higher with $134.
    • There were 123 accommodation establishments with 5–14 rooms, three less than last corresponding quarter. These constitute approximately 6.4% of all 5-14 room establishments in Australia.
    • There were 858 persons employed in Tasmanian accommodation with 5-14 rooms – approximately 7.3% of all accommodation employment in Australia. This is up from 6.8% last corresponding quarter.
