Survey of Tourism Accommodation

2007 Accom ReportThe Australian Bureau of Statistics conducts the Survey of Tourist Accommodation (STA). The purpose of the STA is to measure activity in short-term commercial accommodation in Australia. It is a quarterly census of the following accommodation establishments:

  • licensed hotels and resorts with facilities and 5 or more rooms
  • motels, private hotels and guest houses with facilities and 5 or more rooms
  • serviced apartments with 5 or more units
  • caravan parks with 40 or more powered sites
  • holiday flats, units and houses of letting entities with 15 or more rooms or units
  • visitor hostels with 25 or more bed spaces.

Key Results - Dec 2007

  • In the December Quarter 2007 (compared to December Quarter 2006):
    • Takings from accommodation increased 14% to $5.3 million (up from $4.7 million),
    • Room occupancy rates reached 47.7% (up from 45.1%),
    • Average length of stay in Tasmanian accommodation was 1.8 days (up from 1.7 days) and equal with the National average,
    • An average taking per room night was $118, well above the National average of $98. Only Western Australia was higher with $124,
    • There were 124 accommodation establishments with 5–14 rooms, one less than last corresponding quarter and approximately 6.4% of all 5-14 room establishments in Australia,
    • There were 814 persons employed in Tasmanian accommodation with 5-14 rooms – approximately 7% of all employment in Australia.
