Grand Mercure Hadley’s Ground Breaking Investment

26 February 2009

Construction commenced today on one of the State’s largest tourism projects in 2009.

Speaking at today’s ground-breaking ceremony for Hadley’s new Inner Collins development, Tourism Minister, Michelle O’Byrne said the new $30 Million development in Hobart’s CBD would provide a much needed boost to Hobart’s accommodation and convention inventory.

“Given the potential for continued tourism growth in the months and years ahead, this development is particularly timely, providing an additional 128 luxury suites, and a 600 person convention facility,” Ms O’Byrne said.

“It is significant that, at a time when the global financial crisis is raising concerns in the industry, visionary operators such as the Doherty family are continuing to show confidence in our tourism future and invest in new premium visitor experiences.

“The State Government is committed to enticing visitors to our state by working in partnership with the tourism industry.

“With a total value of over $2.9 million, the new Autumn Marketing Campaign launched today will be one the biggest seasonal marketing programs Tourism Tasmania has undertaken in a number of years.

“Tourism Tasmania has also been preparing business cases and making presentations to our airline partners to encourage additional flights on existing routes, as well as opening up new routes.

“It is clear that our business cases are being well received, with Jetstar adding an additional direct flight on the important Sydney to Hobart route, and Virgin recently announcing new direct flights from Canberra to Hobart.

“And this Sunday, Hobart will also be welcoming Tiger Airways inaugural direct flight from Adelaide to Hobart.

“Tasmania needs to develop new visitor infrastructure and create new experiences if we are to continue growing tourism in this State.

“I congratulate the Dohertys on this development, and look forward to seeing the finished product in 2010.”
