Tarkine Information Brochure Launched

22 September 2009

An information brochure outlining the tourism potential of the Tarkine Road project in Tasmania’s North-West was launched today by the Minister for Infrastructure, Graeme Sturges.

“My Department is currently looking at a range of possible tourism sites in consultation with the tourism industry to determine what would add most value to the region’s attraction for visitors,” Mr Sturges said.

“The aim is to encourage visitors to spend several days exploring the region.

“We would welcome feedback from the community in general on which locations and visitor facilities they would like to see developed along the route.”

Mr Sturges congratulated the Burnie City Council on its recent decision to accept funding of $100,000 to develop an area development plan and related documentation for the Phantom Valley section on the eastern edge of the Tarkine.

“Burnie has maintained an interest in the development of the Tarkine’s tourism potential given its part ownership of Burnie Airport and the potential of the area to create a significant visitor experience, especially for cruise ship passengers arriving in Burnie.”

Mr Sturges said that it was hoped that a submission for the necessary environmental approvals for the Tarkine Road project would be forwarded to the Australian Government in October, with a possible hearing before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works in November.
