Marketing and development for Tasmania’s tourism industry

The changing tourism environment and opportunities for tourism businesses to benefit from these will be discussed today at a tourism industry forum at Launceston’s Country Club Tasmania.
Officially opening the 2009 Northern Tasmania Development Regional Tourism Conference ‘Right Here Right Now’, the Minister for Tourism and the Arts, Michelle O’Byrne, reinforced the State Government’s ongoing commitment to the state’s tourism industry.
Ms O’Byrne said that the combined efforts of industry and government were paying off handsomely, but more work was still to be done to build on the state’s and the region’s tourism success.
“This conference provides a great opportunity for tourism businesses to look at how they can build on the region’s positive performance, with Tasmanian Visitor Survey figures for the 12 months to March 2009 showing that the Launceston and Tamar Valley area recorded a huge 24.6 per cent increase in total nights spent in the area”.
Ms O’Byrne also highlighted the benefits of the Hawthorn Football Club sponsorship in the North as well as Tasmania generally.
“According to economic impact experts, Price Waterhouse Coopers, the sponsorship in 2008 generated an economic impact of $15.136 million, with $7.79 million of this coming from AFL fans visiting the state to attend home games at Aurora Stadium.
“As a result, almost 300 full time equivalent employment positions were created. 197 of these were as a direct result of increased tourist visitation, and were mainly employed in accommodation, cafes and restaurants.
“Most importantly, this relationship is delivering a significant increase in tourism businesses during the traditionally quieter winter period.”
Ms O’Byrne also reinforced the importance of partnerships in gaining the maximum benefit and leverage from the State Government’s significant investment in tourism.
“Marketing partnerships are a very important part of Tourism Tasmania’s approach to promoting access to Tasmania, and the special and unique characteristics of our different regions.
“The State Government is committed to preserving its significant investment in tourism marketing and ensuring our tourism industry remains strong and prosperous.
“The Tas e-Connect online distribution program and the Zone Marketing concept are outstanding examples of our commitment to build a strong, relevant and sustainable tourism sector.
“Initiatives like these are shaping the future of Tasmania’s travel and tourism industry, and are helping to put us in the best possible position to continue our State’s strong tourism growth,” she said.
The forum’s keynote address will be delivered by Ross McLennan Operations Manager for Hidden Valley Cabins in north Queensland. Mr McLennan will share his story on becoming a successful tourism business against the odds.
His family business became Australia’s first carbon neutral resort and tour company operating on 100 per cent solar power.
