Change to Qantas Ground Handling Services in Launceston

1 May 2009

The Minister for Tourism, Michelle O’Byrne, today said she was disappointed to learn that the employment of around 27 Launceston-based Qantas staff would by impacted by Qantas deciding to contract its ground handling services to Tasmanian company Airtrade Pty Ltd.

Ms O’Byrne said she has been advised by Qantas that Airtrade Pty Ltd would be interviewing ground handling staff who are interested in working for them.

“I along with many Launceston residents have enjoyed the excellent service provided by the Qantas staff, and I hope the new contractor will be in a position to provide ongoing employment for these people.

“I have been assured that this decision is in no way related to passenger numbers into or out of Launceston. In fact Qantaslink are increasing their capacity into Launceston by upgrading from their 50 seat to their new 74 seat Q400 planes.”

Ms O’Byrne said she felt for the Qantas employees affected by this decision.

“Companies are actively looking for ways to ensure they can continue offering competitive services during difficult economic times, and it is unfortunate that this can impact on local staff.

“The State Government has formed strong relationships with the airlines that bring valuable tourism dollars to Tasmania, and with our commitment to continue growing the tourism industry, I look forward to Qantas continuing to playing a key role,” Ms O’Byrne said.
