New York Times Promotes Tasmania as Top Destination

18 January 2009

Tasmania’s G’DAY USA delegation is preparing to visit New York City this week where the State is already forging a reputation as a place to visit.

The Minister for Tourism, Michelle O’Byrne, said the New York Times has just listed Tasmania among its top overseas destinations.

“The New York Times newspaper placed Tasmania at number 40 in its list of recommended places all over the world to visit.

“Significantly, Tasmania was the only Australian destination to make the list, with the newspaper highlighting the State’s growing reputation for quality wines and cultural events.

“With more than 1.4 million subscribers, and as many as 14 million people visiting the New York Times on-line, this is fantastic publicity for Tasmania, and yet another example of our tourism industry being kept front-of-mind in potential travellers all over the world.”

Ms O’Byrne said the listing followed other international endorsement Tasmania had recently received, with travel guidebook Lonely Planet listing the Bay of Fires as its number one destination for 2009.

“With the State Government and Tourism Tasmania’s continuing focus on innovative marketing and a commitment to supporting the tourism sector, our State is featuring globally as desirable destination.

“G’DAY USA is a further opportunity to demonstrate to our key markets what Tasmania has to offer, and it is extremely pleasing that we are forging a stronger reputation as a much-sought after place to visit,” Ms O’Byrne said.
