Marketing and development for Tasmania’s tourism industry

Launching of the North East Rivers Festival today, Minister for Tourism and the Arts Michelle O’Byrne, announced that the internationally successful Bangarra Dance Theatre will feature in this year’s festival program.
On the back of a five-week season at the Sydney Opera House, Bangarra will present its latest work ‘Fire’ in Bridport on 23 and 24 October 2009.
“This performance is a retrospective that celebrates the company’s 20th anniversary, offering audiences a feast of inspiring choreography that will draw on the diverse range of works from the company’s long history,” Ms O’Byrne said.
“In keeping with its tradition of performing in unexpected and unconventional spaces, Bangarra will transform an aircraft hangar at the Bridport Airport into a stage for this exciting new work.
“Bangarra exemplifies the ideals we celebrate through this festival. Their dedication to regional touring demonstrates tenacity and a commitment to community that will resonate with festival-goers.”
Ms O’Byrne said that the North East Rivers Festival was now in its third year and incorporates the iconic Derby River Derby.
“For 10 days in October, residents in Tasmania’s North East communities will take part in 16 events across 12 locations, including markets, races, fashion parades and performances.
“The North East Rivers Festival is an important cultural and recreational event that captures the values of creativity, innovation and adventure that define the communities in this part of our state,” Ms O’Byrne said.
The North East Rivers Festival will run from 16 to 25 October 2009. More information is available at www.neriversfestival.com.
