MacroPlan to assess Tasmania’s tourism infrastructure
The Premier and Acting Minister for Economic Development and Tourism, David Bartlett today announced that the Australian consultancy firm, MacroPlan Australia has been appointed to examine Tasmania’s tourism infrastructure.
Mr Bartlett said that MacroPlan Australia was selected from five local and interstate consultancies that had expressed an interest in undertaking this project.
“Encouraging investment in new tourism infrastructure is an important priority for the Department of Economic Development and Tourism.
“The project will initially involve consultation with tourism operators, investors and Government to develop a more detailed understanding of the infrastructure priorities needed to support the future growth and development of our tourism enterprises.”
Mr Bartlett said the report will provide critical guidance for the Department of Economic Development and Tourism in determining what infrastructure gaps and opportunities exist in the tourism industry, including attractions, accommodation and other tourism related experiences.
“It will also develop a whole-of-government approach to tourism infrastructure and investment priorities to help guide future State Government infrastructure decisions and help in meeting the targets set out in the Tourism 21 Strategic Business Plan 2007-2010.
“Once completed, this project will lead to a stronger and more competitive tourism industry that can continue to attract a greater share of visitors to Tasmania and provide them with quality experiences”
“Tasmania’s tourism industry makes a significant contribution to our economy and to our regional communities, directly contributing about 7 per cent to Gross State Product; a figure that is higher than in any other state in Australia.
“During the 12 months to March 2008, over 840,000 visitors came to Tasmania and spent more than $1.3 billion here”
“By encouraging new investment we will develop a more competitive tourism industry that will continue to deliver significant economic benefits for Tasmania generally and our regional communities specifically.”
