Press ReleaseNorth-West Tourist Road ConsultationThe Minister for Economic Development and Tourism, Paula Wriedt, today said the State Government would be conducting extensive consultation on the proposed North-West Tourist Road in the Tarkine. Ms Wriedt said the road represented a $23 million commitment to improving tourism in the area by maximising the Tarkine’s unique wilderness appeal. “It is imperative with a proposed project of this size that we ensure we get it right, and enabling key stakeholders the opportunity to have input into this project is vital.” Ms Wriedt said the three-month consultation period would be conducted by Daniel Leesong, who was being seconded from the Premier’s office. “As former chief executive officer with the Tasmanian Tourism Industry Council, Mr Leesong’s links with the tourism industry are strong, and he has a solid grasp on the issues relating to this development. “I acknowledge the large amount of work that has been done in the last two years, led by the Cradle Coast Authority, with input from a range of interested parties. This work, which is nearly complete, will result in a comprehensive tourism plan for the Tarkine. “It is important that this work is considered when looking at the proposed North West Tourist Road within the Tarkine area, particularly as I have indicated a number of times that the exact route of the road is still to be determined. “There are a range of opinions on what route the road should take and I have an open mind about the final outcome. “However, I am confident that all stakeholders agree that we want to ensure we can maximise the tourism benefits for the area, while at the same time maintaining the integrity of this wilderness area,” Ms Wriedt said.
