Press Release

National Geographic Kids Explorer Challenge

15 April 2008

Fifteen Tasmanian schools will have the opportunity to participate in the National Geographic Kids Explorer Challenge and help boost insurance populations of Tasmanian devils.

The Minister for Economic Development and Tourism, Paula Wriedt, announced the statewide competition today, which will see 15 Tasmanian schools pair up with 15 North American winners of the National Geographic Kids Explorer Challenge to raise money to purchase trees for Tasmanian devil enclosures.

“The National Geographic Kids Explorer Challenge is an annual competition in the USA that takes North American school children to fascinating global destinations," Ms Wriedt said.

“Tasmania’s selection as the location for the 2008 Explorer Challenge is yet another win for the State that comes as a direct result of our involvement in G’Day USA 2008."

National Geographic Kids, like its parent publication National Geographic, is a multi-topic, photo-driven magazine. The accompanying website targets 9-14 year-olds, and aims to engage them by making it fun to learn about the world.

“We’re inviting young Tasmanian students to submit projects on how they would design a Tasmanian devil enclosure and raise money to purchase the trees and shrubs required.

“The winning entrants will meet face-to-face with the 15 North American students when the National Geographic Kids Explorer Challenge arrives in Tasmania this July,” Ms Wriedt said.

Entry forms and Challenge details are being sent to schools across the State today.

The winners will be announced on May 16 to coincide with “Black and White Day”, the annual Tasmanian Devil awareness day.
