National Tourism Honours for West Coast Attractions

01 March 2008

Two tourism experiences on Tasmania’s west coast have been honoured at the 2007 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards held in Canberra overnight.

The Minister for Economic Development and Tourism, Paula Wriedt congratulated the Federal Hotel Group for winning the New Tourism Development category with their Piners and Miners tour, and for their commendation in the Tourist Attractions section for the West Coast Wilderness Railway.

“Since it commenced early last year, Piners and Miners has become one of Tasmania’s most talked-about tourism experiences,” Ms Wriedt said.

Piners and Miners is a guided day-tour that takes small groups into the Tasmanian World Heritage Wilderness along the centuries-old mining and pining rail-lines.

Ms Wriedt said the highly commended West Coast Wilderness Railway was another significant credit to this proud Tasmanian business.

“These accolades are testament to Federal’s business excellence, innovation and commitment to the Tasmanian tourism industry.

The annual Qantas Australian Tourism Awards celebrate the achievements of the Australian tourism industry.

Close to 1000 tourism leaders, representatives and industry supporters attended the gala event in Canberra organised by the National Tourism Alliance (NTA).
